Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Lightly oil 6 cups of a muffin tin. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. Bring a pot of water to a boil. Place the bag of gumbo in the pot and cook for 20 minutes. Carefully remove the bag (it will be very hot), cut one corner with scissors and pour the gumbo into a serving bowl.
  3. Alternatively, cut one corner of the gumbo bag and pour the soup into a microwave-safe container. Cover loosely with microwave-safe plastic wrap or a paper towel. Microwave on high, stirring halfway through, for 5-6 minutes. (Caution: container and soup will be very hot.)
  4. Separate the cornbread rolls into 6 rounds (do not unroll the dough). Place each round into a prepared muffin cup. Brush tops with melted butter and sprinkle with shredded cheese. Bake until golden brown and cheese is melted, 12-15 minutes. Serve warm or bake ahead and reheat briefly in the microwave.

Recipe Tips

For extra flavor, sprinkle a pinch of smoked paprika or cayenne on the cornbread swirls before baking.

If you prefer a crispier top on the cornbread, bake for an additional 1-2 minutes, watching carefully to avoid burning.

FAQ

Can I use a different type of cheese for the cornbread swirls?

Yes, any shredded cheese that melts well, such as cheddar or Monterey Jack, can be substituted.

How should I store leftovers?

Store leftover gumbo and cornbread swirls separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat the gumbo on the stovetop or microwave and warm the cornbread in the oven or microwave.
